What is the FDA-approved use of Sildenafil (Viagra®)?

Sildenafil (Viagra®) is FDA-approved for:

  • Treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men.
  • Improvement of exercise capacity in adults with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) - under the name Revatio®.

Limitations of Use:

  • Not indicated for use in women or children.
  • Not recommended for men with recent heart attack, stroke, or life-threatening arrhythmias.
  • Should not be used with other PDE5 inhibitors.

Viagra® should only be used as needed, not more than once per day.

Who should not use Sildenafil (Viagra®)?

Do not use Viagra® if:

  • You are taking nitrates for chest pain or guanylate cyclase stimulators.
  • You have a known hypersensitivity to sildenafil or any component.
  • You have severe cardiovascular disease or unstable angina.
  • You have been advised to avoid sexual activity due to cardiovascular risk.

How should Sildenafil (Viagra®) be administered?

Take approximately 1 hour before sexual activity. Can be taken with or without food, but high-fat meals may delay absorption.

Important: Do not take more than one dose per day. Do not exceed the prescribed dose as this increases side effect risk.

Neurologic

  • Headache (42% to 46%)
  • Dizziness (2%)

Dermatologic

  • Flushing (10% to 19%)
  • Rash (2%)

Gastrointestinal

  • Dyspepsia (7% to 17%)
  • Diarrhea (3%)

Respiratory

  • Nasal congestion (4% to 9%)

Genitourinary

  • Urinary tract infection (3%)

Serious Side Effects

Cardiovascular

  • Myocardial infarction
  • Sudden cardiac death
  • Ventricular arrhythmia
  • Stroke

Reproductive

  • Priapism

Ophthalmic

  • Non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy

Otic

  • Sudden hearing loss
